Wedding Photography Styles

Digital camera technology has changed wedding photography. Before digital photography, wedding photographers were hampered by the limited number of photo's that could be taken using the non-digital equipment. As a result the styles and pricing was dependant on the number of photos taken and the equipment needed.

You should expect most photographers to be able to blend the different styles of photography to get the blend right for you on your big day. Here's a quick overview of the different styles, so you can consider what might work best for you.

Traditional Wedding Photography:

The traditional wedding photography works to a well practiced formula. The traditional style encompasses the key moments from the church, signing of the register, group shot and portrait shots of bride and groom, bridesmaids and groomsmen and close family.

Traditional shots work best for moments that you don't want to take a chance on. Take the stress out of the day and think about the photo's that will mean the most to you. Make a list for your photographer before your wedding day. Your photographer can then work through the list making sure that everything is captured.

Reportage Wedding Photography:

Having your photographer take some reportage shots can help capture those natural and special moments that happen spontaneously. As the name suggests, this style of photography is more akin to a photojournalist, with the photographer documenting the day is it unfolds without interfering. This natural style has fast become popular with the advent of digital technology and can have beautiful results of the smiling faces and ceremony tears that portray the emotion of the day. A reportage wedding photographer will take hundreds of photos throughout the day and then edit these down afterwards to select the most beautiful images.

Contemporary Wedding Photography:

If you are looking for something with a more artistic approach then a contemporary wedding photographer is for you. Contemporary poses are closer to fashion magazines and the couture images of Milan and Paris. The process normally uses more lighting and effects. Not as high fashion as the shoots on "America's next top model" but the results are more edgy when compared to a traditional approach. You should also expect to have to take a little more direction from the photographer on the day in order to achieve the desired contemporary style.
